Home Assistant 4 Dummies

When it comes to Home Assistant, I’m definitely a dummie.

This website aims to be what I wish I had when I first started making my home a bit smarter with Home Assistant. When searching for how-to guides on even the simplest things in HA (well they sound simple to me), it is surprisingly hard to find articles or tutorials that are relevant, not outdated or do not assume you to be a server admin. Sometimes, I just need things explained to me as if I were a 10-year-old.

I’m not writing comprehensive tutorials that apply to all the various Home Assistant setups, or step-by-step guides on how to build a smart home from scratch. Instead, this is just me documenting random stuff that I have found useful, with the hope that it will assist someone else struggling to get things to work. Perhaps these articles will also inspire someone to dive into the world of Home Assistant.

Don’t get me wrong – I am still very much a beginner and have limited knowledge of all things related to HA. The terms and methods I’m using may be incorrect or unnecessarily complicated. I’m not pretending to be an expert here. I’m happy to hear and discuss your ideas and feedback in the comment sections!

For reference, here’s the hardware setup I’ve managed to install through extensive trial and error:

  • Home Assistant Operating System installed on a Proxmox 8.0.4 Virtual Machine, running on a Lenovo ThinkCentre M900 Tiny
  • Conbee II Zigbee USB stick
  • Dozens of sensors, devices and services added to HA through Zigbee, Bluetooth, WiFi and cloud

One day I might even write an article or two on how I achieved this, but basically I just followed this guide to get started: https://smarthomescene.com/guides/how-to-install-home-assistant-on-proxmox-the-easy-way/
